My baby needs to eat more!

It seems like people are always making comments about Jordan, such as
"You don't feed that kid or anything, do you, heh heh..."
or
"Is your Mommy starving you?" (said with sarcasm)
etc.

The kid has some mooshy cheeks, I will admit. I love them. And he has some rolls on his thighs, but that's because he (the poor child) has really stumpy little legs. Other than that, he is pretty little.

Also, he LOVES to eat! I still nurse him 4-5 times a day and once or twice during the night. He ate baby food for a couple months but then rejected it because he would much rather chew little bits of "real" food. That's fine with me. It's easier, so I just give him bits of whatever is on my plate.

Well, apparently, even though everyone thinks he's huge and he loves to eat, my child is "in danger of falling off the charts as far as weight is concerned" according to my pediatrician. He has grown taller since his 6 month well-baby checkup, but has only put on a couple ounces.

The doctor suggested I try supplementing with formula. I don't want to. Of course, if it comes to that, I will if I have to, but I am going to try other things first. I breastfeed. Hello!

So, here are my thoughts. Instead of just giving him random bits off my plate, I am going to set aside a small plate of stuff just for him. That way I will know how much he's getting.

Also, I HAVE TO DRINK MORE WATER! I am thinking my milk supply might be down because I KNOW I'm not drinking enough. I also want to try to make sure my food intake is more nutritious. I am, after all, my baby's main food source!

So, I have to take Jordan back to be re-weighed in six weeks to see if he's gaining any weight. Hopefully upping the quality and quantity of my milk and monitoring the food he eats at meals more closely will help.

Anyway, I'm kind of bummed. I am afraid I have been starving my baby! I thought he was getting plenty. What if he was HUNGRY?! I feel terrible. Actually, I feel like I've failed him in a way. It is my job, after all, to make sure he gets the nourishment he needs!

HOLY CRAP!

I just looked back in Logan's baby book and at his 9 month appointment, he weighed almost a pound more than Jordan! He weighed 17 pounds, 6 ounces and was 28 inches long. Jordan weighs 16 pounds, 10 ounces and is 27 inches long! And Logan was a skinny little thing!

Looks can be deceiving, I guess.

Here's Logan at 9 months

Well, hopefully I can get some poundage on this baby in the next 6 weeks!

  1. Oh, I really wouldn't worry. He looks happy, healthy...and skinny? No way.
I really hate that the doctor made you doubt yourself. That you did something wrong. They like it when we don't trust our own instincts as parents--maybe it makes them feel ultra-superior. I don't know. YOU know your little one the best, out of everyone. I'm sure he is more active at his age...and maybe his metabolism is very high!
Doctors and their magic "numbers". Statistics are for scientists, not parents...not children.

  2. He has become a LOT more mobile since he was 6 mos. He is crawling, pulling up and cruising now.

I am upset because he immediately went to formula as the solution. Usually my ped. seems pro-breastfeeding.

  3. That stinks about immediately going to formula. I would think if he was hungry he would let you know somehow.

My son's pedi says my kid is overweight b/c he was 56 lbs. He's 4, tall and skinny. You can see his ribs! I had another dr show me his chart and showed on the growth chart where he's the size of an average 6 year old. That made me feel better.
